Distancing Supper – Pork Shoulder

2020-03-29 Jeff

Over the last week we have been eating great. Batch cooking some days, and scratch cooking others. Yesterday we had no idea what we were going to have and that turned into this. Roasted pork shoulder from the freezer, corn fried in pork fat, onions, garlic powder and some herbs, canned black beans and a […]

Coffee as a break

2020-03-28 Jeff

My typical method for a cup of coffee is the aero press you can see behind, but sometimes we need a very nice pour-over.

The recipes from the weekend of bread

2020-03-11 Jeff

Its mid-week now and the bread that I made on the weekend is still holding up nicely. One of them are the hot dog buns. So that I can find the recipes quickly in the future, I’m putting them here. Basic White Bread This is a recipe for basic white bread that is amazing. Lasts […]

Today’s attempt at bread

2020-03-08 Jeff

I made bread yesterday too, but today’s looks a lot better. Yesterday’s attempt wasn’t kneaded enough and I used too much flour on the board when I was punching down and forming the loaf.

Why I use brave browser

2020-03-06 Jeff

A year or more ago I started use brave browser as my main browser. It was a rocky start, but it appears the majority of wrinkles have been ironed out on the browser side. I initially downloaded it because of the built in ad-blocking and the idea that I could reward publishers of sites I […]

Rather than posting to Instagram all the time, I’m starting to update this site with my inane posts. Good idea?

Windows File Sharing Stops Working

2019-10-03 Jeff

I bought my first NAS nine years ago. I built my first computer that was dedicated to network file sharing 8 years ago, and I have been running UnRAID for probably 5 years now. Until Windows 10 file sharing has been relatively straightforward, since Windows 10 however it has been a painful experience. My network […]

Staying away from the socials

Which is something i tried to do, but I joined TikTok for the shanties.

If there was a WordPress plugin that supported “disappearing” stories and was able to distribute them via RSS feed.

And then there was a rss reader that was built to specifically show these in a modern way, I think that could be a big tech killer.

I miss summer

There were so much activity in the garden

That’s all, I miss summer in Halifax, even in 2020 it was the best time of the year.

Not just for the USA, but for the world. Having a sane executive in the whitehouse is important for a predictable world.

Weekend oatcakes

I really love warm oatcakes with old cheddar cheese. The perfect afternoon snack.

I don’t want to go back

2020-12-09

Between the time of me pouring the last pound of beans into the coffee grinder and boiling the kettle, I ordered another batch of coffee on my phone.

The Colombia is the go to, the Holiday Blend is something special

Not two hours later a bicycle courier shows up at the door with the order. This is amazing, and if you are in Halifax I highly recommend getting your coffee fix from Java Blend

There should never be a limit

What possible reason should there be a limit on the password! Maybe a computer science person that can tell me.

Supper last night

2020-12-06

I wasn’t sure what we going to do with this shallow fried chicken strips, but we figured it out.

If anyone has tips for making excellent breading I’m all ears. The seasoning was pretty good, but the breading was weak.

I marinated them in butter milk for a wash before breading and frying.

Another dead hard drive

2020-12-03

This workhorse has started making grinding noises. It was a drive that came out of a laptop that I upgraded to an SSD a few years ago.

Its making grinding noises

Since then I have been using it as an archive drive, something that I dump backups on and then put it in a fancy shoebox just in case a backup dies. Well, this is why you should ALWAYS have three copies for importance things:

  1. The working copy (the one you use)
  2. The on-site backup (or cloud backup)
  3. The off-site backup (or a second cloud)

I like to keep a fourth “archive” backup, this is a backup that isn’t attached to a computer or network. A copy that will likely survive a massive EMP or CME.

Who am I?

I have many interests and wear many hats. I'm a generalist at a lot of things and an expert at a few. I focus a lot of my time on power systems, reducing carbon emissions, electrifying everything, cooking, taking pictures and keeping the internet open and free.
