I got out with the camera this weekend

2020-11-30 Jeff

I was able to get out to take some pictures with my camera this weekend, but I haven’t had a chance to look at them let alone edit them. This shot is from early in the summer of a little bird eating at the feeder, by fall they were eating at the sunflowers.

Drink more water

2020-11-26 Jeff

I’ve been feeling the need to drink more water. During the first lockdown in the spring in was drinking around a litre of carbonated mineral a day, however this time around I don’t know plan on going to Costco till at least January. So, I’m going to channel the advice and tips that I can […]

A weekend in November

2020-11-23 Jeff

It was a pretty good weekend as 2020 goes. There was some sun and while there are rising numbers of #sars-cov-2 all around us, and we are looking at being locked down like we were in April for at least the next 6 weeks, we are doing pretty ok. We got out of the house […]

The door is on the greenhouse

2020-11-16 Jeff

The temperature is dripping quickly at night so I don’t know how many weeks we will have with it. But it’s ready for spring regardless.

And almost done

2020-11-08 Jeff

The plastic is on the collapsible greenhouse, the ikea shelves are assembled and we are almost ready for plants. All that is left is to build the door, and make a floor like structure.

A sunset from the archives

2020-11-02 Jeff

Not much to say today, work has been keeping me amazingly busy. I have also started to sort of work on a side project of a NAShosted version of a homepage. It was sparked as an idea when I saw a wayback Machine version of this site a few weeks ago. It won’t have frames, […]

Staying away from the socials

2021-01-22

Which is something i tried to do, but I joined TikTok for the shanties.

It’s a singing bird

If there was a WordPress plugin that supported “disappearing” stories and was able to distribute them via RSS feed.

And then there was a rss reader that was built to specifically show these in a modern way, I think that could be a big tech killer.

I miss summer

A bee on a white flower
There were so much activity in the garden

That’s all, I miss summer in Halifax, even in 2020 it was the best time of the year.

Not just for the USA, but for the world. Having a sane executive in the whitehouse is important for a predictable world.

2020-12-23

We visited the NS Natural History museum yesterday especially for the mummies.

They were a hit.

Weekend oatcakes

2020-12-20

I really love warm oatcakes with old cheddar cheese. The perfect afternoon snack.

I don’t want to go back

2020-12-09

Between the time of me pouring the last pound of beans into the coffee grinder and boiling the kettle, I ordered another batch of coffee on my phone.

The Colombia is the go to, the Holiday Blend is something special

Not two hours later a bicycle courier shows up at the door with the order. This is amazing, and if you are in Halifax I highly recommend getting your coffee fix from Java Blend

There should never be a limit

2020-12-07

What possible reason should there be a limit on the password! Maybe a computer science person that can tell me.

Supper last night

2020-12-06

I wasn’t sure what we going to do with this shallow fried chicken strips, but we figured it out.

If anyone has tips for making excellent breading I’m all ears. The seasoning was pretty good, but the breading was weak.

I marinated them in butter milk for a wash before breading and frying.

Another dead hard drive

2020-12-03

This workhorse has started making grinding noises. It was a drive that came out of a laptop that I upgraded to an SSD a few years ago.

Its making grinding noises

Since then I have been using it as an archive drive, something that I dump backups on and then put it in a fancy shoebox just in case a backup dies. Well, this is why you should ALWAYS have three copies for importance things:

  1. The working copy (the one you use)
  2. The on-site backup (or cloud backup)
  3. The off-site backup (or a second cloud)

I like to keep a fourth “archive” backup, this is a backup that isn’t attached to a computer or network. A copy that will likely survive a massive EMP or CME.

Who am I?

I have many interests and wear many hats. I'm a generalist at a lot of things and an expert at a few. I focus a lot of my time on power systems, reducing carbon emissions, electrifying everything, cooking, taking pictures and keeping the internet open and free.
